Artie Jones, III was appointed to the position of Director of Economic Development for the City of College Park, in October of 2013.  Jones utilization of industry standards, combined with a progressive approach has transformed College Park into one of the most sought after places to do business in metro Atlanta.

EXPERIENCE

Jones was born in St. Marys Georgia, the son of the first African American County Commissioner in Camden County.  Upon graduating from Valdosta State University, where he also completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Masters of Public Administration Degree, Jones secured an internship with the City of Brunswick, serving as assistant to the City Manager.

After his internship was concluded, the position of the Executive Director of Community and Economic Development became available.  Jones was appointed to the position, serving dutifully for 6 years.  While with Brunswick, he helped to secure millions in grant funding projects affecting the entire region.  He also directed key developments that helped shape Brunswick’s competitive edge for years to come in the coastal Georgia enclave.
Jones was later selected as Director of Economic Development by the City of St. Marys, home of the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.  He was instrumental in relocating the corporate offices of Gilman Building Products from Yulee, Florida to St. Marys in 2013.  Gilman produces enough southern pine lumber to build 65,000 homes annually, or nearly $1 billion in sales.  Jones also convinced the Georgia Department of Labor to maintain an office in St. Marys, and was instrumental in the renovation and reopening of Pilot Travel Center at exit 1 on Interstate 95, one of the largest truck stops in Georgia, creating 75 jobs.

A strong advocate of facilitating quality developments, Jones’ skillset has paid immediate dividends in College Park, home of the world’s most traveled airport in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.  Jones was instrumental in the recruitement of VXI Global Solutions and the creation of up to 520 fulltime positions.  Jones is currently developing Wally Park, a mixed-use commercial operation along Camp Creek Parkway.  Upon completion, Wally Park will house two select-service hotels, multiple restaurants, a travel plaza and airport parking/shuttles.

Artie has also developed College Parks 1st Tax Allocation District located in downtown College Park. College Park’s first tax allocation district is anticipated to attract over $1.2 billion in development to the new Airport City Project.  Mr. Jones and his team announced the arrival of BMW’s $15 million technical training facility to locate at the Georgia International Convention Center’s Gateway Campus.  The facility will attract 8k to 10k trainees annually to College Park Georgia correlating into significant tax revenues captured in College Park hotels and restaurants.

Mr. Jones is now working on establishing College Park’s second tax allocation district along College Parks Old National Highway and Godby Road area.  This redevelopment area will have a significant impact to the canvas of College Park, as there are huge gains anticipated from the relocation of those hotels and industry impacted by the development of the ATL’s sixth runway.

Most recently, Mr. Jones successfully negotiated a deal with the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, to have their development league basketball team to call the City of College Park home.  The new G League basketball team known as the College Park SkyHawks, will claim College Park as their home court. As a result of this deal, Clearly College Park, the development authority for the City of College Park is constructing a new $42 million dollar multi-purpose arena that has seating capacity for 5,000 spectators and the ability to house comedy shows, concerts, convocations, and other notable events. The arena is scheduled to open November 2019.

Mr. Jones recently unveiled the Airport City Master Plan which is a mixed-use development that covers over 420 acres of Clearly College Park owned real estate, just  minutes from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  The project falls within the boundaries of an enterprise zone, tax allocation district, and a federal opportunity zone, which makes this site very attractive to developers and end-users. In Phase I of the Airport City Master Plan alone, it is estimated that the development will boast over 4 million square ft. of development to include an retail outlet, restaurants, and big box / commercial, 600 keys of hotel development, 2.4 million sq. ft. of Class A Office, and over 400 units of residential development which translates to over $750 million in development.
