Mayor Denis “Denny” Shortal was elected as Dunwoody Mayor in November of 2015. Prior to being elected as Dunwoody’s third Mayor, Denny served two consecutive terms as the District 1 City Councilman and served as the city’s Mayor Pro Tempore since December 2008. He helped organize and advocate for the incorporation of Dunwoody and served as the Co-Chairman and Treasurer of “Dunwoody Yes” in the campaign for cityhood. 

He was a pilot for Northwest Airlines before retiring in 2007 and flew a variety of aircraft, from the DC-9 to the Boeing 747. He served in the Marine Corps for 32 years and retired with the rank of Marine Brigadier General. He is also a veteran of the Vietnam War where he flew more than 300 combat missions and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 23 Air Medals, and a Navy Commendation Medal – all for action in combat. Born and raised in the small farming town of Wright City, Missouri, Denny is a graduate of the University of Missouri with a BS in Agriculture Business / Economics.
 
He and his wife Meredy, married for 49 years, have three sons (Brian, Matt and Andy) and four grandchildren. Denny has faithfully served his community as the Co-Athletic Director of St Jude Catholic School and as the president of the non-profit Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Georgia which assists Marines, their families, and Wounded Warriors. He is a member at St. Jude Catholic Church and All Saints Knights of Columbus.
