Event Description:
Representative Sam Park is the first Asian American Democrat elected to the Georgia State Legislature. He is the grandson of refugees from the Korean War and son of Korean immigrants. Sam was raised by a single mother who instilled in him the importance of faith, family, and hard work. Rep. Park's commitment to serving others and passion for good public policy have been driving forces in his professional and political career.
Sam earned BA in Political Science and BS in Economics (Georgia State University 2009) and JD from Georgia State University College of Law (2013). With a Fellowship in Civil Rights and Constitutional Law from American University Washington College of Law, he earned his Masters in Law (2014). Sam served in the Georgia State Legislature as a legislative intern (2012 & 2013) and the Maryland State Senate as a legal aide (2014).
In 2014, Sam’s mother was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer with two years to live. Through her fight against cancer, Sam learned firsthand how access to healthcare was a matter of life or death. On a platform of expanding Medicaid to ensure access to healthcare, Sam ran for office as a first-time candidate in 2016, unseating a three-term Republican vice-chairwoman with a grassroots campaign to become the first Asian American Democrat and first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature.
