Jimmy Burnette was elected Mayor of the City of Suwanee in 2011 after 16 years of service on the Suwanee City Council. He was also a charter member of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), serving for 12 years until he was elected mayor. Burnette has provided long-term leadership and vision as Suwanee has grown into a regional leader in the areas of smart managed growth, downtown development, and parks.

Burnette was the recipient of the 2022 Starr Award from the Georgia Municipal Association for his contributions toward creating a unique and vibrant environment in the downtown area of a city in Georgia. He was also inducted into the Georgia Municipal Government Hall of Fame in 2021.

Mayor Burnette is an active member of the Georgia Municipal Association’s Legislative Policy Council and Federal Policy Council. He represents Suwanee on the board of Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful and chairs the Partnership Gwinnett Public Funding Entity. In 2019, Burnette earned a Certificate of Dedication from the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute – the organization’s highest certificate level.

Born and raised in Suwanee, Burnette’s father led by example, serving as a City Councilmember for 32 years, from 1963-95. The mayor is also a lay leader at Suwanee United Methodist Church, of which he is a longtime member. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgia Southern University and is a graduate of the 2003 Leadership Gwinnett class.
