Harry Johnston
Chairman
Cherokee County

Harry Johnston was elected as Chairman of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners in 2018, taking office at the beginning of 2019.  Chairman Johnston previously served for 14 years as District 1 Commissioner, from 2000 through 2014.  Before that, he served for four years on the Cherokee County Planning Commission, the last two years as Chairman.

Johnston’s priorities as Chairman focus on reasonable and responsible management of the county’s rapid growth to retain the quality of life as the county grows, and on maintaining county services  and infrastructure to meet that growth while keeping tax rates the lowest in the region.

Chairman Johnston came to Cherokee County in 1964 at age 11.  He graduated from Cherokee High School in 1970.  He earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Finance and Accounting from Georgia State University.  He was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in 1980, and remains licensed today.  He worked for Southern Company and its affiliates for 41 years, serving in a variety of financial reporting and accounting management roles, retiring in 2018.

Chairman Johnston has been married to Rebecca Wheeler Johnston for 46 years.  Rebecca is a semi-retired writer and the long-time former editor of the Cherokee Tribune newspaper.  She has written and published three books, two about the history of Canton and Cherokee County and one a compilation of her holiday newspaper columns.  They have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Chairman Johnston also serves on the boards of the Atlanta Regional Commission, the Cherokee County Water & Sewerage Authority, Cherokee County Public Health, the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia Pension Board, and the North Georgia Metropolitan Water Planning District.  In his spare time, he enjoys home projects, boating, and traveling.
